Hainan Medical University, located in the beautiful tropical coastal cityscape of Haikou City, the capital of Hainan Province, is the province’s only national medical college. School for nearly 70 years, has established postgraduate education, general undergraduate education, student education, adult education, vocational education, and joint training of doctoral academic education in both school structures. The total number of enrolled students is currently more than 14,000, including 8925 full-time students and more than 500 international students. The Bachelor’s education program provides 26 specialties (majors) in the disciplines of medical sciences, natural sciences, and management.

Hainan Medical University carries the dream of the health of the Hainan people in its students, and its prosperity benefits from the establishment of the Hainan Provincial Special Administrative Region. The predecessors of the University are the private Haiqiang School of Medical Technology (Vocational), founded in 1947, and the private Hainan University School of Medicine, founded in 1948. The two schools were merged in 1951 into the Hainan Medical College (undergraduate education was piloted in 1977-1979). The name of the college was changed to Hainan Medical College. In 1983 it was merged with Hainan University and became the Faculty of Medicine of Hainan University.
Hainan Medical Univerity covers an area of 1,492.76 acres, of which Chengxi Campus and Longhua Campus together cover 606.21 acres, and Hainan Pharmaceutical Research and Development Science and Technology Park covers 50 acres. The library building covers an area of 33,000 square meters and contains more than 1.04 million copies of paper books, as well as a modern e-book system and computer network service system.
The College, whose mission is to train medical talents, has sent more than 50,000 graduates to the community, which are distributed in Hainan and across the country. The graduates have become the core strength of the medical and healthcare team in Hainan Province. At present, the college has a doctoral degree conferral point in first-level clinical medicine disciplines; five master’s degree conferral points in basic medicine, clinical medicine, pharmacy, traditional Chinese medicine and biology; clinical medicine, public health, nursing, pharmacy, dentistry, etc. There are 5 professional master’s degree authorization points; 27 bachelor’s degree courses covering medical, scientific, management, and engineering disciplines; a multi-level talent training system is in place mainly for undergraduate students, covering masters and Ph.D. students.
A total of 12827 full-time students are enrolled in most provinces across the country, including 10 doctoral students, 647 master’s students, 9660 undergraduate students, and 2510 junior college students. The College vigorously promotes the internationalization of education and recruits 638 international students from 33 countries along the Belt and Road and African countries.
The University employs 1095 full-time lecturers, including 924 with master’s degrees, accounting for 84.38%; 403 with doctoral degrees, accounting for 36.80%; 761 senior professional technical lecturers, including 140 professors. There is 1 foreign high-level talent in the “Thousand Talents Program”, 5 national “Ten Million Talents Projects”, 17 State Council special position experts, 1 nationally outstanding teacher, 1 national Chinese medical college and university faculty, 22 provincial and ministerial-level outstanding contribution experts, 6 provincial-level teaching staff and 4 outstanding talents of the new century.
The school has tropical medicine as a hallmark of its leadership and has a complete system of tropical medicine teaching, research, and clinical practice that has established a solid direction for tropical medicine research. It has 2 national specialties, 1 national experimental teaching demonstration centre, 1 national clinical teaching demonstration centre, 1 national excellent video open classroom, 1 national education informatization pilot project in undergraduate college, and 5 Ministry of Education excellence programs in medical education and training and 1 Ministry of Education pilot project in comprehensive reform. There are 8 provincial-level specialties, 2 provincial-level pilot teaching demonstration centres, 7 provincial-level teaching teams, 19 provincial-level quality courses, and 6 provincial-level quality online open courses.
The University has 4 affiliated hospitals, including Hainan Hospital (Hainan Provincial People’s Hospital), the first and second affiliated hospitals, and the affiliated oncology hospital, the first three of which are national grade III general hospitals; 4.36 million emergency services were provided and 225,000 patients were discharged in a year. There are 4 hospitals that are not directly affiliated. There are 8 national main clinical construction specialties, 2 TCM main clinical construction specialties, 69 national residency training bases, and 2 national specialist training bases. It is the leading unit of the National Water Emergency Education and Training Base and the National Emergency Medical Rescue Team (Hainan) Project. It plays a leading role in the establishment of major national special projects such as the trauma treatment system covering the South China Sea region and the “National Maritime Emergency Medical Base”.

Our university has 30 Hainan Provincial Government Scholarships, including 20 for undergraduate students, a 6-year funding term; 10 for graduate students, 3-year funding term; It covers tuition fees, accommodation fees on campus, and medical and accident insurance for our university. Other expenses are to be borne by the students themselves.
